How To: Set Up Twitter Notifications

by Daniel Neville on 2009/02/18

With BrandsEye we continually strive to add functionality that will make Online Reputation Management that much easier for you - the user. Way back in 2007, Rob our illustrious and red headed CEO, wrote his now almost famous “10 Rules To Recover From An Online Brand Attack”. Rob stated the following in his second rule:  “LISTEN, monitor the Internet for conversations about your brand, you can’t react to something you have no idea about.”

In order to help you listen BrandsEye is now providing notifications via Twitter whenever someone says something about you or your brand online.

Why Twitter you ask? Well firstly we’re all hooked on the micro-blogging platform (you can follow @brandseye here) and we also reckon there are enough people who use Twitter (see here and here) to make BrandsEye notifications via Twitter extremely useful. We believe that this use extends beyond Reputation Management as well. Check out this post on how to use ORM to drive consumer engagement – once you have read this the value of getting notifications via Twitter becomes even more apparent.

Basically BrandsEye notifications via Twitter have the same functionality as the current text message and email notifications. You have the option of receiving an Immediate Notification of mentions or even a Daily or Weekly Summary. Here’s how you set it up in five easy steps:

1) The first thing you need to do is create a Twitter account for yourself (if you already have one then this is easy). Next follow @BrandsEyeNotify here.

2) Next you need to log into your BrandsEye account and click on the 'contacts' tab in your left hand navigation. Select the contact person who would like to receive notifications via Twitter and insert their Twitter Username into the field provided. BrandsEye allows you to set these notifications up for multiple contacts within an account.

3) Once you have added your details it’s time to set up which notification you want to receive. As you can see below, you have the option of receiving an Immediate Notification or a Daily / Weekly Summary. Once you have decided which notification you would like, click on 'Configure'. This will allow you to place filters on what mentions you would like to be notified about.

4) I have chosen to receive Immediate Notifications via Twitter. As you can see from the screen shot below, I  have also set certain filters that mean I will only be notified about mentions that fit certain criteria. For my Immediate Notifications I have asked BrandsEye to only let me know about mentions that are relevant and have been rated and given a 'sentiment score' (how positive or negative the mentions is) that is negative. For more on terms like 'sentiment score' check out this post on ORM terminology.

5) Once you have set this all up and hit the 'Save' button, sit back and let BrandsEye do the notifying. Notifications will be sent to your Twitter account as a direct message, which means that you will have immediate and easy access to mentions as they come rolling in. Take a look at the screen shot below:

As you can see the top two direct messages are Daily Summary notifications that include a link to the BrandsEye page where the full list of mentions can be viewed. The remaining direct messages are Immediate Notifications of mentions that are being pulled in by BrandsEye in real time. The notifications also include links to the URL where the mention was originally published, allowing for quick response time and better ORM.
