How To Create Volume Reports

Working in a field or discipline which is very young comes with its challenges, but we don’t see this as a bad thing. Here at BrandsEye we try to update the functionality - no matter how small that update might be - as often as we can so that we’re constantly trying to make things easier and more useful for you.

Today I’m pleased to announce a functionality update that allows you to pull reports on the volume of mentions that you are receiving. This report has in the past been available on the home page of non-insight accounts but has now been added to the custom reports. So what does this volume report do?

To put it simply, the volume report will allow you to pull a report detailing the daily volume of mentions in a particular category or for any filtered subset of a category. This becomes very useful in a number of instances:

1. Gauging volumes of mentions around individual products and brands. This allows you to see how much traction particular campaigns are getting and where you should be focusing your PR and marketing budget. It also allows you to identify which products or services might need special attention. For instance, if the volume of mentions around a brand or service increases rapidly it might mean there is a problem that needs to be attended to. If consumers are heaping praise on you, this is your cue to get some PR action out of the positive conversation.

2. Optimising your phrases and categories. The report will help with making sure your account is operating to a point where you are pulling as few irrelevant mentions as possible. You can use the volume reports to find out the volumes of mentions certain categories are pulling in and then make adjustments according to these reports.

Here are some things to be aware of when pulling the volume reports:

  • On non-insight accounts the phrase categories are compared in the volume reports. This means that only mentions that have been marked as relevant will affect this report
  • On insight accounts the rated categories are compared in the volume reports. This means that a mention has to be marked as both relevant and it has to be rated (given a sentiment and credibility) before the mention will have an affect on the report.

Comparison by phrase is still possible via the custom reports. You will just be required to tweak the variables so you are viewing data attached to individual phrases and not categories. If you group your phrases into relevant categories it also makes the volume reports all that more useful. For example, separating your different product lines into their own categories will allow you to pull the useful and relevant information discussed above out of your reports.

How to view your volume reports

Step 1
Right click on custom reports on your left hand navigation under Reports. Select the volume report from the drop down box and select the date range - in other words select the period of time across which the volume of mentions will be measured - and finally select the categories you would like to compare. It should look like this:

Click show - and view your report.
