Trail Running

by Kira Akermann on 2011/08/29

In light of Arbour Day, our newsletter and blog posts this month are loosely based around the theme of being sustainable. Being green involves conserving and protecting our environment. But what about discussing all the ways in which we should try and enjoy the environment? Perhaps if people spent more time doing outdoor activities they would find the passion to protect the environment too.

Trail running is a new hobby I recently picked up, actually running as a whole has been a pretty new concept my legs had a hard time adjusting to. “It’s always the first month” runners always say, “The vile burn down your throat stops after that”. I seemed to give up running before I realised that statement is in fact true. As soon as running becomes an activity of comfort rather than pure agony, I believe it is a natural progression for one to want to participate in running events. Be it on or off road running. This all led me to sign up to the Winter Trail Running Series.

The races have all taken place in the most breath-taking of settings - in forests, up mountains all featuring incredible views over our beautiful mother city. This of course didn’t always help, as you wished you could plant a picnic and truly appreciate the view rather than hitting the next uphill. But I must say, after successfully completing the whole series I can say the Trail running bug has definitely bitten.

There are heaps of Trial races happening all the time (see links below). So if you can push yourself to get out for a trot once a week I do encourage you to participate in races. And trust me, you are stronger than you think.
