Springbok Group Stage Stats

by Gareth Heuer on 2011/10/06

I decided to give you a quick update on how the Springboks fared during their group stages. The 4 metrics I’ll be reporting on are volume of conversation for the day (VOL); number of tweets for the day (TWS); the opportunities-to-see or be exposed to Springbok related conversation (OTS) and the 3 most mentioned players for that particular match day (MMP).

Match 1 – 11 September 2011: South Africa vs. Wales

This first game was a tightly contested match which resulted in a Springbok victory by the narrowest of margins. 17 – 16 the end score, a close, but great start to the Boks’ World Cup campaign.

  • VOL: 18 614
  • TWS: 15 789
  • OTS: 18.77 million
  • MMP: John Smit, Francois Hougaard and Morne Steyn.

Match 2 – 17 September 2011: South Africa vs. Fiji

This game, although a physical encounter, proved to be a bit of a white wash at the end. Some pundits had predicted an unlikely upset, but sanity prevailed and South Africa managed to beat Fiji by 49 – 3.

  • VOL: 18 167
  • TWS: 15 175
  • OTS: 13.15 million
  • MMP: John Smit, Morne Steyn and Danie Rossouw.

Match 3 – 22 September 2011: South Africa vs. Namibia

The Springboks unleashed their power onto Namibia, who unfortunately turned out to be the Whipping Boys of Group D. A magnificent display of running rugby and practically no defensive errors lead to the Springboks winning this one 87 – 0.

  • VOL: 14 923
  • TWS: 12 993
  • OTS: 17.77 million
  • MMP: Bryan Habana, John Smit, Francois Hougaard.

Match 4 – 30 September 2011: South Africa vs. Samoa

The final group game was a tough encounter with the mighty Samoa. We endured a wave after wave of attack and had very little ball possession. The end result was a narrow 13 – 5 victory.

  • VOL: 12 831
  • TWS: 10 461
  • OTS: 15.80 million
  • MMP:  John Smit, Francois Louw, Bryan Habana

As we move into the quarter finals now it will be vital that we continue supporting the Springboks both on and off the field. #GoBokke
